Hello Don,
Just to clear a few things up.
1)You don't need to change an chips to run it the drive in high-density mode, you just need to drive the controller at 16mhz. There are 16mhz sources on the st motherboard, so the upgrade basically involves soldering a wire from one place to another, and cutting the 8mhz source.
There are instructions on numerous sites out there. I know of the bloke selling them too (k-tronic, he posts on www.atari-forum.com), and he could probably tell you how. If you don't feel confident doing stuff like that though, it's understandable :-)
2) You don't have to cut the drive, you could also alter the hole in the ST case that the eject button pokes through. Or, if you are replacing a dud drive, you could take the button off it and glue it on the new drive. All depends what you can be bothered doing!
To me, $21 isn't TOO bad. Sure, you could track down a drive for $5 or so and mod it yourself, but for the convenience of being able to just buy it and plug it in, it could be worth it. I think he'll sell them for $19.99. Whoa, save $2!! hehe
If you want to take postage into account, k-tronic is in Canberra (where George Bush was today... oh, aren't we priveliged!!)
Good luck,
Tom (from Melbourne :-)
