Hey bud, looks like you have at least 2 problems here.
First thing, are the CDs dirty or scratched?
NO?? OK then, next thing you didn’t mention if you were able to access these disks before with this unit... VERY IMPORTANT....
The third thing to remember, is that their is no such thing as an "Atari" CD-ROM. The format of all CDs are to an ISO "Redbook" standard and by definition will be read by any CD-Drive on planet earth.
Then reality kicks in.
You said that the External SCSI drive is a very old model... It is an established fact that Old model CD-ROMS have difficulty reading the majority of modern home made "burnt" CDs because of the COLOR of the CDRs. Yes, the old model laser beams are "colorblind" to almost anything except the non burnt or "pressed" pure silver disks. That is why you cannot read the "Home-Brew" floppyshop gold CD but can read that Silver "pressed" PC-CD-ROM you tested it with.
The answer here is to open up the external CD-ROM case and replace the old SCSI-CD-ROM drive with a modern one (at least 40x).
Forth, the rest of your problems sounds like you don't fully understand the requirement of properly setting up a SCSI chain. In short, both ends of a SCSI chain have to be terminated only once. The end inside the Falcon is of course terminated already. On the other end though it sounds like you are mixing up manual termination (with the terminator plug) on the back of the external drive with the fact that the Jumpers on the CD-ROM drive itself (inside the external case) ALSO allow the drive to SELF terminate. You can use ONE or the other, but not both! Their is also a difference between Active and Passive termination. Open up the Box and check the termination jumper on the CDROM itself.
My Falcon is equipped with a 12x External SCSI drive with an active external terminator. Software is HDDriver v8.01 and the CD-Driver is a generic one for MINT I got off the Susi-B Archive CD.
The combination reads ALL CDs just fine in fact that’s how I get software to the Atari environment. I download from the internet on a PC, burn with the PC and feed it to the Falcon.
