You can use most older 1.44meg drives with slight modification - changing the drive id to 0 instead of 1 (or is it the other way round?!)
A lot of newer high density drives don't have these jumpers though, and unless you want to start soldering, they won't be any good to you.

If you want to use the new drives to actually read and write 1.44meg drives, that is possible too, but requires a little more work.
