Are you sure you're "formatting" the drive ?
Actually, "formatting" means the physical initialisation into sectors and tracks, just like on an ordinary floppy disk.
This actually goes FAR beyond the "formatting" of todays IDE/SCSI-drives which does not initialize sectors and tracks but only "empty" the existing ones.
I recommend to use AHDI to really re-format the drive (this will take over an hour, so better be patient) which
However, i am afraid that the disk actually has many bad sectors and that these 5MB was the largest portion still usable.
