I found a disk with HDDriver which was shipped with my Falcon, and BigDos is on the disk as well. Nice that it seems less terse than AHDI but I still don't know what I am doing.
If I need BigDos before I can use the hard drive, then how do I install it >first<? I click on it and some stuff blips by, and it quits. (this is my biggest annoyance with these Atari utils I have tried. I don't know enough about them, but I cannot even read what they are doing).
What I have tried so far: "install device" does not do anything at first. Then I used the HHDriver utility, which appeared to format and partition the disk. Since I prepared a 3 GB disk, I tried to partition it three ways. Then when I click "install device", I get the three disk icons I'd expect, but I cannot use them. When I restarted, they were gone. When I try to use HDDs rightmost menu, with the device info, IDE settings, etc- it asks me for the location of the HHDutil itself (this seems odd since it IS itself, and I'd guess would know what directory it is in). When I select HDD in it's menu it says "wrong version" or something to that effect.
Odd experiences! I guess I will try a little 500+ MB drive i've got somewhere, just to see if one small partition is easier. Seems like one of those things that is "easy" if you already know what you are doing! I have installed a good dozen completely different operating systems, complete with hard drives. Never had I been this lost! I've got manuals for the software I got my 030 to run, now it seems I need manuals for the Falcon, GEM, TOS, and HDD and/or AHDI
