The point is not so much that people still sell CAF for big bucks, but the intellectual property that it represents. If it is given away, people are free to do anything with it. If, as Taro was saying, they have been using MROS code in subsequent versions- there may not be a clear way to give away ONLY v2.06 and not code which is used in other versions as well.
Charlie Steinberg seems like a nice guy, reasonable. It is not my place to say, but I doubt if he personaaly minds what people do with Atari Cubase. Still, companies are made to be cautious by their lawyers, etc so they don't accidently give away code which they still sell, or might want to reuse in some form. For a software company, the code they had written all comprises "the assets". Also, now Steinberg himself does not even own the company which bears his name, they were acquired by Pinnacle about a year ago. Since the new company owns the old versions, but likely does not know what they are or how they work, they are not going to give them away, I am guessing.
Still, won't hurt to learn more about their old apps, maybe find an old developers kit for MROS!
