For future reference, here's what you did.
For any hard disk to boot itself, some bits of code have to be written to the 'boot sector'.
When your Falcon is turned on from a cold start, the hard drive spins up and runs its boot sector if anything is on it. That little bit of code tells the Atari a hard drive is connected and to boot from it.
You can't install a boot sector by hand!
You launch your disk driver utilities and tell it to make your drive bootable.
