OK, well we'll assume that the drive is ok then... What do we have left?
1. There are certain drives that the falcon doesnt like (not likely to be this).
2. Your Combel is bad (Its a bad design).
3. The HD cable is bad (most likely).
On one of my Falcon motherboards, the IDE doesnt work at all. Even with no device plugged in (and no IDE cable on the mobo either) HDdriver reports 2 IDE drives with a name like "ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ" or other similar wierd characters. I definately think the combel is bad on this mobo.
On my main falcon, I have been using a 1gb 2.5" for the last couple of years without problem, but last week I changed to a 10gb 3.5" drive from out of my Xbox (very good drives for the falcon, they are so quiet!). I had a palava trying to get it to work though, it didnt like the standard 40pin, two connector IDE cable out of the PC, it was reporting the drive as a slave with the wierd characters again, and no matter what jumper position I used it would not work properly. Eventually I decided to change the IDE cable, and grabbed a spare 80pin ATA100/133 cable, and although it came up as a master, it still said that there was a slave connected with the same wierd characters. I ended up cutting the cable back to the middle connector, and it was OK after that.
What you have to remember is that the IDE interface in the Falcon is not a proper interface, in that there is no buffering going on, and any faults with the cable will show up, where on the PC they probably wont be so obvious.
