I was planning to make this project a "Super 520 STFM" with 4MB RAM, TOS 1.0 and 1.4 (for maximum compatibility with games), and audio/video out ports. It's the TOS version and more readily available STFM that made me go this route.
In the US, STEs are rare and often go well over US$50-$100 on EBay. STF/STFMs are generally easier to find, but are NOT a dime a dozen like in Europe.
But, if I come across another 520STFM, I'm going to buy the plug-in version instead from Keychange. ATY said that the plug-in version just as good as the solder-in version. The only reason why Best Electronics doesn't sell the plug-in version is because he claims to get many calls of the MMU board coming loose from its socket. ATY said that this could easily fixed by hot-gluing the MMU board to the motherboard and then placing a piece of foam-board plastic over the MMU board. That way, the keyboard and shielding will press down on the MMU board to give it continual pressure to stay in its socket. The hot-glue reinforces this contact.
ATY has claimed to have done that many times too with no problems. So the people who have the MMU boards coming loose and complaining to Best obviously didn't take the precautions above.
Has anyone had this problem with the plug-in version - that the MMU board becomes loose resulting in the computer not booting up, and then having to open up the computer, and pushing the MMU board down before the computer works again?
