Firstly, Cubase doesnt initialise the FDI, so for this you need the fdi init program in the Auto folder. You could try running a different program before Cubase, something that does init the FDI properly, like Audiotracker for example.
Technically I don't believe there is any difference between Soundpools and Steinbergs FDI as they are made by the same company. One is Maroon, and they other is a lovely dark green ;) (I have the green kit).
The older FDI's could only sync to upto a 20bit stream, later FDI's were able to use 24bit. For the older versions a mod was available (IIRC it consisted of a new GAL).
