Just an update to let anybody interested to know what's going on.
I have completed a prototype built on a piece of breadboard and have it running with a Microsoft Itellimouse optical. The mouse is actually a USB but comes with a PS2 adapter and works well. I've also tried it with other PS2 mice and all work OK.
I know there are other solutions but some people like me like to dabble with a soldering iron, and as I stated in my original post I am prepared to make some units for a small cost.
My next step is to implement a middle button routine and then to design and make a proper PCB.
