Many joypads with the "standard" 9-pin interface
that had more than one button however could
confuse the IKBD and therefore not work correctly.
That seems to depend on the used machine though.
For example, the Atari Pro-Controller (late Atari
2600, 7800) can't be used on my 1040 STf but
works fine on my 1040 STE.
