w00t!
On a hunch, I opened up my second PC (I've got two on a KVM) and took the drive out of it. After removing the bottom cover, I found the DS0 and DS1 traces on the pcb. I was able to change the drive to DS0 rather easily. After some work, I fitted the ST drive face and button to the new drive and installed it in my STE, wedged in with styrofoam (as the ST drive locator pins don't fit). It works fine now!
All those disks I though were dead were just rejected by the old drive.
The drive was a Toshiba, I didn't note the part number but will get it if you guys want it.
