I guess i can sum it up rather quickly because the STE
hasn't seen so many hardware upgrades.
CPU:
- T.U.S. in the UK had an 68020 accelerator named Veloce
especially for STE. Also had up to 4 MB FastRAM
- Processor Replacements named PAK could be installed
in an STE with a new case. Most powerful was an 68030
- Did the 16MHz + cache speeder from Heyer & Neumann
ever come out for the STE ?
- I think the CPU in the STE can be double clocked rather
easily. Speed gain is ridiculous due to lack of cache.
RAM:
- SSS in Germany had a RAM-card to get up to 12MB
i think. Did not work with all software as far as i recall
Harddisk:
- IDEal by T.U.S. drove an internal 2.5" IDE driver along
with Veloce without recasing the STE
- Ideal E by Gellermann & Felmuth allowed to drive an
internal IDE disk drive
- Hard & Soft TOS 2.06 card ( + SpeedBridge by GE Soft)
connected an IDE drive (little case modding required)
- However, IDE drives were not the favourite choice on
the STE. Get an external SCSI controller (for example
from WB Systemtechnik named The Link) and an
external SCSI-case. It will also drive CD-ROMs and
writers. Not cheap, but reliable.
Disk upgrades:
- A standard 1.44MB diskdrive with ID select will do.
Your STE will require an AJAX chip and a 16MHz
clock signal. Pentagon-GmbH should still have some.
Memory Upgrades:
- 4MB in standard 30pin SIMMs. Sufficient for most
ST applications
Video upgrades:
- Overscan STE. A few more pixels for a lot of money
- Lacescan - A more or less DIY solution
- Software based Interlace. Amiga feeling, but 640x400
in at least 4 colours
That's basically it. Compared to the number of PAKs,
speeders, video cards and other extensions for the
(Mega) ST, this is rather poor and in most cases, rather
expensive and nowadays terribly hard to get.
