I don't think GreggBz was using the PC floppy as a 1.44MB floppy drive. I think he's using it as a 720K drive. Am I correct GreggBz?
If so, it shouldn't be a problem. I have several STs that use 1.44MB PC floppy drives that I use as 720K drives.
GreggBz, are you using 720K disks? Don't use 1.44MB floppies as they may not be able to be read/written by the ST, and the drive may make weird sounds.
Are you inserting a blank 720K disk into the drive when you boot up? That will speed the bootup sequence up.
Is there any sound when you press the keys when you reach the desktop? If there's no sound, it could be a bad sound chip which controls some floppy drive functions.
This problem sounds vaguely familiar to me though, and usually just putting a new drive fixed the problem. Is you PC drive defective too?
Anyway, that's just off the top of my head.
