My kids still use my old Atari (old 130XE). Mostly for games. Galaxian is a favorite of my 6 year old. My 8 year old likes the old Phantasie RPG series. The 4 year old loves the light gun games, especially Barnyard Blaster. I always liked Alternate Reality and Star Raiders. I've hooked my Atari up to Steve Tuckers APE Telnet interface through the PC. I don't have an 850 so I haven't got Contiki working. The serial cable you're looking for can still be found. B&C and Best still have them (as well as many other types of 8-bit cables) I believe.
