Here's some advice

Upgrading a 1040STf means soldering. Additionally, i strongly recommend to upgrade to 4 MB. I think 2.5 only work the patch that allocates the 1.5 MB that are actually not present.

Also, i don't think there's many Linux- or BSD-variants around that work without memory protection and the 68000 of the Atari ST has no MMU.

If you want to run Linux/BSD on an Atari, better get a Falcon or a TT.

However, any Atari ST will run MiNT, and MiNT is a unix-derivative as well.
