Well, i thought about this for a while, too. :-)

The STE Shifter has been improved with regard to external
syncing in comparison to the ST Shifter. I think it's
possible to clock the STE internally with 12 or 12.5MHz
and synchronize the Shifter using an external circuitry
providing the standard 32MHz to it.
Never tried it, but it's probably possible ...
