The easiest upgrade is to replace the 68000 with an
68000, clocked with 16, 24, 32 or perhaps even 48MHz
and a 2nd level cache to reduce bus access. That is the
easiest upgrade.
Introducing an 68020 or an 68030 is definetly possible
and has been done on a regular basis (Veloce, PAK/3),
even though this will involve some additional circuitry
and imply incompatibilities (the PAK had a TOS 3.0x as
far as i recall).
It's not possible to use an 68040 or 68060 without huge
efforts as these processors do not support a 16-Bit bus
directly.
