I'm going to have to agree that the 2600 is my favorite system.. i recently got a 7800 (off of ebay), and found that the games weren't a huge improvement over the games I have for my 8-bit 800xl. I've always wanted a 5200, and perhaps I might find a good one someday, though I have more games on disk for my 800xl.
In my collection I have 2 2600's (a 4 and a 6 switcher), a newly acquired 7800 (though the controllers are beat), 3 or so 800xl's a bunch of 1050 drives, 2 400's and an 800. I brefly had a Sega Genesis when they came out, but ended selling it and buying an Amiga and getting a ton of games for it..
The 2600 just simply has the best games, and the effort was really put into game play and packaging, and making the whole thing work. Looking at a lot of the 7800 games, it was clearly evident that Atari didn't have the resources anymore to put everything into game design like they used to. I guess that's a result of the great video game crash, which I was totally unaware of when it happened. I think I got my first 2600 for Christmas 1981 or '82 and continued buying games when the prices tumbled.
My current favorites are Yar's revenge (thank the internet, now I finally have instructions for this!), ROTLA (solved it the other night), and Robot tank (which contrary to what I've read, plays perfectly on a 7800. I also have other rarites such as Mogul maniac (sadly the joyboard got canabalized years ago), pete Rose Baseball and a few other late-year Absolute titles..
