hey evan,
many reasons. i came very late to the whole computer world. the STE was the 2nd computer that i bought personally. (my family had a mac performa back in '94 but after that it wasn't until about two years ago that i bought my 1st computer, the mighty commodore 64! i thought that it would be nice to start where most others did...)
when i found out that atari had made the ST series with stock MIDI ports i did a bit more research. i then figured that an ST would be a great way to see how i liked working with MIDI...not to mention it would be easy on my budget ;D
i'd also been into making music with LSDJ on gameboy so the chip aspect was a welcome extra for me.
the whole notion of a dedicated computer for sequencing became a very nice thing. in fact, i don't think i would do any sequencing with my powermac just yet. the atari is just so user friendly that it hardly matters to me that it's an extra piece of hardware. it's timing is solid and that's what counts.
i would love to get my hands on a falcon to try out cubase audio but for what they're selling for on ebay these days, i might as well buy a powerbook...thought i must admit, it's VERY tempting!
another thing was the design of the STE. the one i bought was packaged as if it was a piece of trash and was beat up on its way here. so the case is messed up. when i got it and saw what happened to it (the guy who packed it must be a real moron) i was going to try and return it. the floppy drive was unseated and like i said, the case was bashed up and cracked quite a bit. the rubber feet underneath had also somehow melted ;(
i set it up anyway, took a while to figure out where the hell to plug the mouse in! and then once i found out that the machine was only physically damaged i became completely attached.
it's been great ever since.
i've bought a STacy since.
but yes, the design of it is great! i had totally missed out on the whole computer thing in the '80's. amigas, ataris...had no idea! all i had was an NES! i just played guitar all the time!
i guess i have a bit of a unique sense of nostalgia for these old computers. they way they were designed (amiga's, c64's, ST's) so compact and slick...the fact that you had computers like ST's that were geared towards musicians...really cool stuff. they were like "specialty" computers. not "all in one's" like today that kinda do some things o.k. and others pretty well! i must admit that my g4 is rather nice! i just can't afford to max it out yet! it will be nice to see how it compares once i'm able to run something like logic's latest release or when i scrape the cash together to pick up an Mbox and run pro tools...maybe get an official copy of live...the only thing is, the atari just doesn't really crash! (of course you can make it, but then again it will normally right itself, i just don't always have the patience :)
well i hope that i answered you question a bit... can't think of another reason right now...mainly it's the reliability of the machine that will more than likely keep me using one for quite a while!
