Memory can be very tight on a 512k machine, do you have accessories loaded? auto folder?
after those possibilities, you can look at programs to free up a little more ram, can't remember what they are off the top of my head,
I shall say this, memory can be very, very tight on a 512k machine & to make an atari useful, at least a 1 meg upgrade is a very sound idea.
