Electronics which are unpowered for years may get broken due to the lack of electricity. This means the electrolytic capacitors: their dielectricum consists of an oxide layer in a solvent.
The oxidation is caused by electrolysis - when the capacitor is powered.
Therefore you may have to let run old hardware/electronic for some hours; the best about twice in the year resp. if it doesn't work. Perhaps it may regenerate...
