I second this, an external mixer (not necessarily limited to two stereo pairs) is a good choice. I looked out for one a while back, then there were cheap ones with 8 channel input (4 stereo pairs) from Behringer for about 75 euros.

Checking now, the prices has gone down to under 60 euros..
