This is going back a bit, but if I remember right, the 5620/1040 ST have a couple of solder links next to the front-most tos socket. One or the other of these links will be set (shorted), this sets the memory size of the tos chips.
So presumably, to swap from a 6 chip tos to 2 chip version you just clear one links and short the other.
I don't know if this is the same as in the mega st, but I assume so.

Ps: I have just had a look on the ST motherboard, they are labeled as A16 & A17.
