If you are going to port rc5 client to the Atari, I suggest a decent MiNT installation with GCC. MiNT also have networklayer compatible to what unix uses, so you wouldn't need to rewrite that either.
The most standard distribution of MiNT can be found at:
ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/atari/mint then get the KGMD there.
After this, you can complete the setup using the sparemint distribution, available at:
http://sparemint.atari.org/
