Here my two euros worth.
The ROM-port IDE device isn't such a bad design. THe lack of HD-drier support is a big minus in my view, but I am sure apdate or patch to HDdriver could resolve this, if the device gets enough support (ie. users get ne and use it, and developers work on suporting it). Problems are there to be solved.
As for the use of the ROM port I think this would only be an issue for two user groups, those who use the ROM port for audio ad ons and those who use the ETHERNEC device. I think te are les musicians in the scene now than in the past, and many of those use the higher end Falcon/TT machines, btoh of whic hhave their own IDE and SCSI stems respectivly, so would have no need of this device. The Ethernec on the other hand is used a lot by both high low end users alike and is still being made, this is a growing rather than diminishing problem. Since adding networking to an atari is an obvious and common upgrade, thre is a real clash here. However there are ways around this paticular problem by using etherNEA instead, which uses the ACSI port (and interting switch around, but it works)so for most users it isn't the end of the world, and for those it oes bother, maybe it'l spur the deevlopment of an alternative system;)
As for euroepan contributions to the Atari scene. I think it's fair to say that since the commercial demise of Atari, many if nto mot fo the hardware and software breakthroughs have come from this side of the Atlantic. Without the contributions fo european developers, the Atari platform would be much less advancd than it is now.
