Unfortenly he is rather quite expensive. He do sell pre-programmed PIC chips for a resonable price. We thought of buying PICs from him and do a much cheaper production around for the rest.
Unfortenly he wasn't very positive about that, even though the project is "open source". I quite didn't get his reasons clear to me either.

In short; if there is a new project that can do it cheaper than the one available, I say go for it!
