Wasn't the box you made a composite video/s-video to VGA box? (I could have swore it was) If so, those boxes are very common and moderately priced (US$40-$120 depending on brand and quality). You can buy these at some of the bigger electronics and video game specialty stores (at least here in the US). So I'm not surprised you didn't sell any as the bigger manufacturers and stores probably priced/manufactured you out. These were sold mainly to gamers who wanted to connect their Playstations, Xboxes, etc to a VGA monitor, so they are quite common.
I think an RGB to VGA box specially made for the ST would be better, and you may sell quite a few as I'm sure many ST games would love a larger color VGA screen (or better, use a projector to project a 100" screen :-) ).
Are multisyncs that sync down to 15KHz still made? I wasn't aware of any. Got any links? (especially in this side of the pond...)
