I had an ST238 RLL that died exactly the same way, with tragic data loss involved to boot, so to speak.
As for replacing it with an exact same model, there are a few computer recyling places that may still have a few around, however they are not a cheap solution.

If you do get hold of a STxR drive commercially make sure you get a warrenty as they had a reputation in their day for being over complicated and unreliable.
