This topic has come up a few times on other computer forums (many Linux types use CF cards on embedded boards).
Several pieces of the puzzle are missing above. First, the figure is actually 100,000 writes for older cards, a million or more for new cards. Second, That figure is per memory cell, not the entire card. Third, modern CF cards do 'wear leveling', essentially picking the least used cells for the next write operation, spreading the wear around. That last time I saw the calculation done, it would have taken 5+ years of continuous writing to the card to reach the danger mark.
Lastly, let us remember that most ST hard drive access are reads!
In short... I wouldn't worry. Odds are that a hard drive will fail BEFORE the CF card. But as always, backups aren't a bad idea.
