I just replaced an internal 1040 STFM drive with a SONY MFP920 just as listed on
http://atari4ever.free.fr/hardware/drives.html
The file is --
SONY_144.ZIP
The only think that was tricky was the 0402 jumper resistor on the Sony, to swap it you need good eye sight and some real skill with the soldering iron – (they are in the center of this drives board on the bottom, labeled and near the connector.) I paid $9.00 for it with S&H.
For external drives you'll need to do more work.
Look up the TEAC FDD specification on your favorite search engine and get the pin out for a standard FD drive. (TEAC FD-05HF-8630)
The pin out for the Atari is very similar, looks like you could add power (+12v and +5V) and splice an Atari external cable to the Sony drive.
The only signals that look different are the drive select signals - I don't know how they work, but I'm guessing that they work with the drive jumpers on the Sony FFD. You'll have to check that out and figure out what has changed. Probably best to take the old drive pin-in connector and make a little swap board with a power supply.
But that stuff is do at your own risk.
It will take some electrical know how.
I've never tried it or seen a reference to doing it.
