1632 Systems (www.1632systems.co.uk) still stock 720k drives that are ready to go for the ST. The only thing is their front panel is a normal one, meaning you need to modify the case slightly to get it to fit. Other than that it's dead simple. I got a Sony drive from them for an STe and it was a real "plug n play" affair.
If budget is a real concern, most 720k drives will work provided you fiddle a little with the jumpers at the rear of the drive. Old "junk" 286 and some 386 PC's that you can cannibalise are the best bet, and computer recycling businesses.
USB drives won't work, nor will low cost generic 1.44 drives as they are cost reduced by stripping out most of the electronics that are needed to set up the control signals correctly for an Atari to work with them. They can't sence the difference between DS-DD and HD disks either:(
