yes i have heard that this drive was a bit different and needed it's own drivers to work - you are right it does have a set of dip switches on the rear too and 2 DMA ports - scsi in and scsi out
as for the slowness to be honest i can't say i remember i've had it so long without working! it would be great if you could mail me the original disks you have
if i get it to work i'll let you know how i got on :0)
