Hi, Ben.
Welcome to the exciting world of ATARI computers hobbying etc etc blabla ;)
Now, there´s no FLASH ROMs in your STFM, the OS is stored in those EPROMs, usually 6 of them in the STFM, placed in a row close to the 68000 CPU. IF you´re lucky, those EPROMS are placed in sockets, else you´ll have to use your soldering iron... BUT, there´s more options: TOS 2.06 is available as RAM-TOS at most Atari FTP archives, just place the file TOS206XX.PRG in the AUTO folder and reboot... :) XX is for the language, I use TOS206SW.PRG in one of my STE:s because I wanted swedish menus. It boots VERY fast from the harddrive, especially compared to windows, and my 2.06 STE can boot up 23 times while my MAC IIcx does it ONCE!! ;) (yep, it´s true!) Anyway, if you want to change the ROM:s, best thing to do is to empty those EPROM:s with a UV-lamp ( if they have the glass "window") and burn TOS 2.06 into them. I have a EPROM burner connected to one of my STE:s, so that computer have actually burned it:s own ROM:s :) Now, even the ROM TOS 2.06 should be available at some Atari FTP site.
About the RAM upgrade, simply check out the RAM chips already there, and buy some equals! While you´re on it, I´d recommend a full 4 Mb upgrade, especially if you´re going to use RAM TOS. Some games won´t run with 4 meg, but there´s a AUTO prog to fool the machine to think it has only one meg. It works fine, promise!
Good luck, and most important: have FUN!
