Thats so true!
Does anyone remember when Win95 came out, some coders took the code, reversed it, and took out all the junk, replaced some of it with efficient stream-lined code that did exactly the same thing, and what was left, was a seriously powerful, fast, lightweight OS that fully installed to the HD in under 20MB, and they got done for messing with the code!!
Even worse, was that most of the code, MS then took and re-used.
I like Linux, but even thats gone way beyond any reasonable size, and Both linux and Windows are guilty of being far too big, and simply not being any good for the size.
I mean, ok, look at say Magic & Jinnee, and then compare it to anything on a PC. How much power do you get on the PC? Absolutely bugger all.
Its not just the O/S either, everything is the same...
Look at the power of say Papyrus Office on the humble Atari, and then look at something similar on a PC... Everytime I have tried an office type application on the PC, the speed is bloody awful, the size is absolutely disgusting, and they are rarely any real cop either! - look at the power of Papyrus! - you can alter the size in both height and width of each individual character, you can place an image or text absolutely anywhere to the pixel on Papyrus, and yet, can you do that with MS Office or StarOffice? NO!
Papyrus comes on a couple of floppy disks, those others, all need at least a CD and these days a DVD!!!
Once of the worst ones I have seen, is Printer drivers! - I had to download a driver for my mothers printer a few months back, and have a gues how big it was? 80MB
WHAT!!!???? - 80 friggin meg?
Its a sodding driver FFS!
How big does it need to be ? - a few K at most, but 80 MB!!!
Thats because its full of utter crap that noone actually wants or needs... Half the junk is built into Windows and that too is mostly crap that again, no one ever needs, and this alone has stopped me from ever using their products again. My printer on my PCs is a lowly Epson C44 and while its not the best by a long way, the drivers are tiny ( I only use the bare drivers, not the extras ) and I know when I need to replace the carts cos the printer stops printing and the lights flash! - when that happens I press the red button, and whichever cart I can open, I replace! - Job done. Why do I need 80bloody meg of junk to tell me that?
The problem also lies with plonkers who cannot be bothered to learn even the most basic things to do with PCs.
I sold a set of inks to a woman last week, she came back to the shop a few days later, complaining that the innks I sold her had ruined her PC. She said that she took the printer down to the store where she bought it, they tested it, and charged her £10 and she not only wanted the money ack for the inks, but she also wanted the £10 and extra to cover the loss of fuel for her running about. I asked what the shop said and she told me, that the shop said the printer was fine!!! - So, its her PC thats at fault.
I asked her how many printers were installed on her PC and she said 4 but she only had this one! - after some jostling with her, I went out to her PC, removed the info for the other Printers, and this one worked just fine!
Stupid people.
Needless to say I charged her double for the call out. I know people dont understand and thats fine, witho0ut them, I would be out of a job, but to have that attitude, stinks!
Anyway, with clearing out the old drivers for her ununsed printers, I saved over 300MB of files on her HD... WTF?
This is how its getting and we are all too stupid to realise and its only getting worse!
Look at Windows Vista! - just to display the desktop, you are going to need a DX10 Graphics card!!!
Well, at least that will stop the Crappy Celerons with onboard graphics for a while anyway, so at least there is some good news!
