Okay, let's put this to rest once and for all. There _is_ a "code" on the Jag Cheats FAQ- but it doesn't do anything. It isn't even related to the VLM! Most likely, it is a bug or a remnant from when Jeff Minter designed the VLM. He originally used external audio in when he was developing the VLM and didn't have access to the JagCD. He _wanted_ to have external audio inputs, but it was cut due to cost constraints. The _only_ way you can add external inputs is as follows:

1. Own a Jaguar/JagCD developer's kit. This mod _won't_ work with ordinary equipment!
2. Hack the VLM source code to recognize external inputs.
3. Build a custom board w/your modified code and attach it to your developer's style JagCD.

There! Wasn't that easy? You've most likely spent hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours- all so you can listen to $5 tapes and LPs and have them work with the VLM. For all the money and time you've spent, you could've just bought the stuff on CD and worn out you JagCD listening to them.

Doubt me? Here it is, directly from my sources:

From the Jag Code FAQ (which was last updated in 1998):

External Input Mode:
Close lid without a CD in the drive. Hold A + * + #.

NOTE: This "code"may be a bug[emphasis added by me], because the read head will continually
attempt to seek the surface of the CD once you've entered it. This could
possibly shorten the lifespan of your Jag CD.

From Jaguar Explorer Online (early 1999):

//// VLM External Input Mode... NOT!

Thanks to Sean Routte, Jeff "Yak" Minter has finally admitted that there is
no external input code built into the JagCD Virtual Light Machine. Here's
the e-mail:

There was an analog input mode, but it needed to work with special hardware
- namely, an external A to D board, which we lashed up in Atari to test the
VLM before it was finally integrated into the CDROM. The only way to get
external audio in now is to have such a board made and to use a hacked
version of the VLM code running on a development-system Jag. A mate of mine
in Bristol uses such a system, and will even make them up to order - but
since they are all hand-made, they do not come cheap!

I would have liked an external-input option in the JagVLM, but I guess it
wasn't that important to Atari so it never happened.

Cheerz...
