No,a Freddy chip is not needed.
The Freddy does a lot of memory management.
But these functions are mainly multiplexing.
And this can be done with an LS157 of LS158.
I do have a schematic diagram on how to put 256K into a 600/800XL. This is set up with only TTL-Chips.
