>>the drive appears to turn off during use?
I have a couple of drives that do that. You can hear them spin down. They do seem to still work ok, but I do lose data when I use them, so, I have not bothered with them.
I have another one that does it because its on its way out.
And, I have another 2 that do indeed powerdown when not used after so long... They have a jumper that stops this.
So, your particular drive might be on its way out, it might not, it might be cureable with a jumper, it might not?
No help but there you go.
>>its not a power issue
Have you checked the MOLEX connections?
>>it does have a cD drive directly above it? overheating?
Doubtful. the HD will get many many times hotter than any CD Drive.
Even if the CD was to get THAT hot, it could not possibly affect the temps of the HD enough to power it down, unless of course, there are flames too??? LOL
>>And what do i do about my 9, 1gb partitions and the drive icon limit? a to z ? As i'm thinking of a ide something?
Ataris normally only use C to P
This is 14 Hard Drive Partitions and of course A and B for the Floppies so thats 16 in total.
You will need some extention to allow higher than "P"... MiNT and Magic are 2 Operating Systems that go there, and of course your CD Driver allows the use of a drive letter above P for the CD.... I use ExtenDOS under TOS/GEM and SPIN under Magic & MiNT.
You have 9x1GB and that means you have C: to K: so, if you added IDE, then even under TOS you get 5 more partitions
I myself have opted for a 512MB and a 4GB Compact Flash card on my IDE and a 4GB on my SCSI although I have a spare 4GB, I find this a little OTT for an Atari in truth.
>>ide for software
>>scsi for data
>>less errors (hopefully)
Less errors?
If you have errors now, then your HD is on its way out... No matter whether its IDE or SCSI, you should NEVER have a single error at all.
>>may just littlenet st-falcon. . . . .
Yeah, I have gone through a number of "NETWORKS" on my Ataris... I even tried writing a kind of LAPLINK for my STs yonks ago, and it kind of worked... almost, but never got past the "bugger whats wrong now?" stage!
