Well, for the life of me I can't recall where, but when I was trying to find out what the differences were between the MPI and Tandon mechanisms, I ran across a page where it was claimed that the MPI's eject mechanism would rattle the heads out of alignment, and suggested the drive door was best closed while the drive was spinning in order to help center the disk.
In any case, all indications are that my drives are working fairly well, so I just need to order another firmware from B&C.
