Now I know thats a incorrect rumor!!!....
If you take a close look at the inside of the MPI drive you will see that the only part of the drive that is affected by the "snap-up" drive door of the MPI design is the "pressure-pad-arm". Its just a plastic arm on a spring with a cotton button on the back that holds the media against the drive head. The drive head is on the BOTTOM in a very thick and sturdy drive rail that has no contact with the shock of the drive door. Since this drive is Single-Sided, this was an option back in the day.
The only problem with the Single sided drives was that every few years that cotton pad on the pressure arm would wear down. The Arm would then scratch the disk.
Replacing the pad is a trival thing, just squeeze the retaining ciip, pop it out and pop in the new one, take like 2 minutes. You can get a bag of then from Best for a couple of bucks.
