To test the fpu you should try some apps that use it. DHS Falcon demos come to mind instantly.
And as for the hack/patch: If the '_FPU' cookie isn't installed, then the compiler won't be able to detect it. It's not like any application is magically going to know whether there's an FPU installed or not. You have to do it yourself. Atari tried to make this search easier by the means of the cookie jar. Now, If the fpu's cookie is not in the jar, then apps that look for that specific cookie are not going to know that it's there. That's what I imply that the HC compiler does.
As for the editor... Seems like it relies on path settings that are not consistent in TOS 4.04 in relation to other TOSes.
