I agree. The only thing I can think of, is that it uses 030 and/or FPU specific code to speed up compilation perhaps?

No, the F in FPU is "floating point" which is very not needed to compile code. The GFA Compiler does not use the FPU at all and it's extremely fast. I also don't see how an FPU could speed up a GEM app or text editor type app, as they should be written with just integers.
My guess is the author simply used the FPU as a double check to make sure it was a TT or some such nonsense. I suspect like some other posters, that if you remove the FPU cookie then the TT version will either flat out refuse to run or it will operate as the standard version.
