well, the look depends on many factors (except the chosen skin):
- color resolution (you can have even truecolor gradients if you have truecolor -- aranym, graphics card; or at least textured window elements -- 256 colors)
- the AES (you can use XaAES, N.AES , MagiC or MyAES except original one -- esp. MyAES looks quite cool)
- desktop used (teradesk, thing, jinnee)
etc.. I really don't feel my desktop looks ugly, look at http://ihrisko.cyberio.org/~mikro/used.htm -- this is my desktop in MagiC I used some years ago (I switched to XaAES + FreeMiNT for development)
Btw, you'll soon discover bog standard falcon is not very suitable for gcc/g++ development... these tools take a lot of mem/cpu power + freemint itself with all unix stuff... 14 MB is really the minimum. Better to try PureC (just C but very nice and friendly) or for Aranym (some kind of emulator for GEM/TOS)
