Thanks everyone for their help! I tried out Pure C under STEEM and it seems like the best way to go for now (even if it means remembering to put my variable declarations at the top of each function instead of inline)

I actually have the original books for The Atari Compendium as well as the Abacus books "Atari ST Internals" "GEM Programmer's Reference" "Atari ST Machine Language" and "Atari ST 3D Graphics" (that one is a hoot to read these days, since it turned out to be the focus of my degrees and my career) I'm good to go for references.

Next up is slowly restoring a useful suite of hard drive contents on the Falcon. I'll be sure to chime in when I need help.
