Far as I know there are no dealers left with "sane" prices. There is also places like ebay where the prices tend to become insane all to often anymore. Only option left is used second hand equipment which is hard to come by.
Also plan "B", as you noted, do without.
A grand, is a drop in the bucket compared to what I got in my Hades. However I ain't complaining, that's just for informational purposes. ;o) It was worth every last penny.
