The worst they can do is say NO.
Give them the opportunity and they might impress you.
If something is cheap and you penny pinch then that is rude but if they have an inflated price then they are expecting the barter.
Most suppliers have a LIST price and offer discounts to retailers who inturn offer a smaller discount but the list price is rarley paid unless the retailer can get away with it or the supplier is greedy.
The average markup is 50% (Margin = 33%) this might seem high but the overheads means the supplier will breakeven at about this point and they need to make money to be there in the future.
So generally a discount of 20-25% is achieveable.
I don't dutch auction. They give me their best price and if I don't like it I don't buy. If they offer a lower price a after i decline then I still don't buy as they are then playing me and can't be trusted.
The other more preferred option is to pay full price but find out what they will throw in for free. This means they improve their turnover and clear more stock and space. You get a better deal.
Use this next time in your local retailer (independants are best). The advantage of the independants is that they know their stuff and give you great support unlike the bigger concerns.
P.S. the last few days at the end of the month are the best days to hit. Managers are tring to get the figures up so will offer deals to improve figures so they can then get a bonus.
