A long shot, but I had similar symptoms when my NVRAM died. First it just lost the time, then it screwed up the boot resolution really so that no monitor could display it (just black). It also did something with the boot preference that prevented the machine from booting.

You could try zapping the NVRAM contents (there are utilities for that, I just don't know where).
