It looks like a typical serial server, which provides a way of accessing serial ports via ethernet. It needs software on the PC side. Save yourself a great deal of trouble (and cash) and use a serial cable instead. It won't act as a SLIP<>Ethernet gateway (like the Palm ethernet cradle does iirc).
