It's a serial server. From the PC it looks like a serial port. The serial data stream is tunneled through ethernet. Think of it as a remote serial port. You'll need to turn the serial connection to something useful on your TCP/IP network, and that won't happen automatically.
I'm familiar with serial servers through my job, and from what I've seen I can't say that it's of much use in this context. Most likely you're better of with a serial cable, or (much) better, a real ethernet interface.
